Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who is the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This auspicious occasion is celebrated with great fervor and devotion across India and among Hindus worldwide.

History of Janmashtami

The history of Janmashtami is deeply rooted in ancient Indian scriptures and legends. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. The story of his miraculous birth and early life is a central narrative in the Hindu epic, the Bhagavad Gita.

According to the legend, Lord Krishna's birth was not an ordinary one. His parents were imprisoned by Devaki's brother, the evil King Kansa, who received a prophecy from the sky that Devaki's eighth son would destroy him. Despite the challenging circumstances, Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell, and as the story goes, Vasudeva carried him across the river Yamuna to safety in Gokul.
